Notes on Jonathan's Daughters
by Max O'Rell

From The Strand - 1891

Notes on Jonathan's Daughters

Portraits of Celebrities: Max O'Rell Max O'Rell is the pen-name of French writer Léon Paul Blouet - and this article is a marvelous introduction to his light, humorous, and very observant style. O'Rell wrote several volumes on his perception of the British, then moved on to lecture in (and write about) America. This particular article is excerpted from his book, A Frenchman in America. It offers some very interesting observations on the differences betwixt American and English "ladies" -- one being the differences in their education. American women, O'Rell points out, are not educated separately from American men, but side by side in the same schoolroom -- and thus, both males and females cannot help but observe that women are equally capable of learning exactly the same things that men are.

This one article got us started searching out more books by Max O'Rell. Fortunately, electronic editions are easy to find online, and print editions of all his books (from the 1890's!) are readily available (and inexpensive) on Amazon.com.
