Dress: In Season and In Reason
by "A Lady Dressmaker"

The last issue of each month in Girl's Own Paper provided a round-up of fashions for the following month. Besides offering wonderful illustrations of Victorian fashion, these articles are packed with information on the types of fabrics used, the colours involved, and information on how fashion has changed from one month (or year) to the next. Patterns are often discussed, as the articles provide information not only on what to wear but how to make it. The author also offers interesting insights into, of all things, fashion ethics -- including an ongoing crusade against the wearing of feathers and bird skins, and (in the first installment of 1881), tips on how using certain fabrics might help support the British wool industry.
